The early paintings were intended to be expressionistic. My grandfather Herbert Boeckl was an early member of the expressionist school and I had grown up with mostly copies and posters of his artwork. When I was 17 for reasons I can’t explain my cousin Mathias and I decided on his families summer vacation that we would be artists. The vacation was really great. We bought watercolors and paper and made some really bad pictures on some really high quality paper we got in Italy. That started my interest in painting. He was much smarter than I as he would go on to become an art historian instead of continuing to paint. I on the other hand was kicked out of art classes in elementary school when I told the art teacher to go to hell. So essentially without any training purely based on an idea – the die was cast for me.
